Gender-based Violence (GBV) Sub-sector

The protection and safety of women, girls and other at-risk groups can be achieved only through collective and sustained action because GBV is addressed best when multiple sectors and organizations work together to create and implement unified prevention, response and risk mitigation strategies. Thus, the Regional GBV Sub-sector, facilitates the coordination and implementation of GBV programming in the 17 countries of the RMRP, including liaison and coordination with other sectors (coalition-building), training and sensitization, strategic planning, and monitoring and evaluation. The sub sector was established in 2018 and operates alongside with other sub-sectors, under the umbrella of the Protection Sector. The Regional Sub-sector is comprised of more than 15 standing member organizations; including UN agencies, government entities, INGOs and NGO implementing GBV programmes within the R4V platform. The sub-sector provides technical support to the national GBV Sub-sectors which extends to the 46 organizations implementing GBV activities within the Refugee and Migrant Response Plan (RMPR). The Subsector has the following overarching objectives: • GBV Coordination at the country level is enhanced to ensure that multiple sectors and organizations work together to create and implement unified prevention, response and risk mitigation strategies • Specialized quality multisectoral GBV services for refugee and migrant Venezuelan GBV survivors are available and prioritized in the overall response. • Informed advocacy positively influences governments and humanitarian actors (including UN, NGOs and CSOs) to prevent and mitigate GBV and respond to the particular needs of Venezuelan GBV survivors • The safety, dignity and well-being, of groups at risk of GBV is enhanced through increased measures to a) mitigate the risk of GBV and b) empower women and girls

HOW TO PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY THROUGH IMPARTIAL AND JOINT NEEDS ASSESSMENTS

Humanitarian crises impact women, girls, men and boys differently and result in variances in needs, resources, capacities, viewpoints and coping strategies. While sex- and age disaggregated data (SADD) are foundational to any gender analysis, SADD in needs assessments alone is not enough to identify and analyse the unique experiences and needs, particularly of women and girls in crises, including systemic and underlying vulnerabilities and forms of marginalization and human rights violations.
