A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY…. ABOUT THE CHILEAN COORDINATION PLATFORM

In April 2018, the UN General Secretary gave the instructions to IOM and ACNUR in order to lead and coordinate the regional response to the situations of Venezuelans refugees and migrants, who look for the access of rights and basic services, protection, as well as self-sufficiency and economy integration. Consequently, the Inter-Agency Coordination Platform for Refugees and Migrants from Venezuela was established as a forum for coordinating the response and joining efforts in 17 Latin America and Caribbean countries, with the particularly approach of achieve coherence and consistence throughout the response.

At the national and sub-regional level, the Regional Platform is complementary with the local coordination mechanisms. The nationals and sub-regionals platforms dedicated, which work closely with local governments, they are in charge of the operational coordination and the implementation of The Refugee and Migrant Response Plan. Chile since 2019 had been part of the Conosur Platform with Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay y Paraguay.  However, due to the increasing number of refugees and migrants in the country, Chile became in the third country to receive a larger number of Venezuelans in the Latin American region. Under this frame, Chile has created an Independent National Platform since 2020, which is dedicated to the territory implementation of the Plan with 17 active partners; eight international organizations: UNHCR, IOM, UNICEF, UNAIDS, WHO/PAHO, ILO and UN Women; in addition to nine civil society organizations: International Red Cross Federation (IFRC), INCAMI, Scalabrini Foundation, Vicaría de Pastoral Social de Caritas, Fundación de Ayuda Social de las Iglesias Cristianas, FASIC and ASOVEN. Between January and March 2021, the National Platform has reached 29,633 Venezuelans beneficiaries.
